Moose Hunt FAQs

What to Know Before You Go

With limited tags, strict regulations, and unique backcountry logistics, moose hunts require detailed planning and preparation well in advance. From understanding the draw process to preparing for the physical demands of the hunt, there are many factors that make this pursuit unlike any other. Whether you’ve already drawn a tag or are just starting to explore your options, we’ve answered some of the most common questions hunters have about what it takes to embark on one of North America’s most iconic big game hunts.

  • How do I get a moose tag?

Moose tags are limited and drawn through a lottery system in most areas. We’ll guide you through the application process or help you explore potential options for landowner or outfitter tags if available.

  • When is moose hunting season?

Typically in the fall — September through early November, depending on the state and unit. Most hunts are timed around the rut for calling and better visibility.

  • What’s included in a moose hunt?

Your hunt includes a professional guide, camp lodging, meals, horse support, and full assistance with game recovery and care.

  • How physically demanding is it?

Moose country can be rugged and remote. We recommend a moderate to high fitness level for these hunts, especially during the rut when bulls may move great distances.

  • How big are the bulls in your area?

While size varies by unit, hunters can expect bulls in the 35–50 inch range — with chances for even larger depending on the tag and conditions.
